coolest thing ever
So I go out early this morning to put the hummingbird feeder out (first shoveling another four inches of snow off the path I'd previously shoveled). An hour later the feeder is covered in snow and I see the poor guy buzzing around it trying to find an opening to the nectar. So I go shovel some more snow, brush off the feeder and take a toothpick to the holes.

Before I can hang the feeder back up, I hear the buzzing of wings. I look up and see the hummingbird -- a male Anna's. I don't move. He comes right down and feeds at the feeder while I'm holding it. He stops and looks at me. His iridescent red neck looks purple up close. His wings buzz as he lifts off. Then he feeds again. He did this three times while I tried not to jiggle the feeder or breathe.

Finally he retreated to a safer distance a few feet away and I carefully hung the feeder up. He flew off, but I'm sure he'll be back soon -- he's been guarding that feeder for the last week.

I bet he was. They seem always on the edge of survival in the best of times.

Probably time to go shake some more snow loose....

Oh! I love the buzzing sound their wings make.

The hummingbirds around here love our trumpet vine. It's right outside the window where the cat likes to perch. I was in the room when a hummingbird came right up to the window and hovered there for a moment. The cat went berserk. The bird seemed aware it was safe from the cat and hung there tauntingly before flying away.

Is your trumpet vine still flowering down where you live? Ours like the trumpet vine too (for the winter we hang the feeder right in the middle of it) but it finished in August I think. But our roses went into November and the dahlias into early December (!)

Our trumpet vine stopped flowering in, oh, probably early October this year. Everything bloomed late, and the trees lost their leaves late. It's like we had two weeks of fall, and then BOOM! winter. Our roses hung on a while, too.

I'll have to try hanging a feeder in the trumpet vine. That's a good idea.

Also, ha! to the cat. :) With age, ours has stopped getting sooo riled up by bird and squirrel-taunting...but she still gets worked into a frenzy when other cats come by and bait her. ;)

That is the coolest thing ever. I put up a hummingbird feeder last summer but never found a good place to put it where I can see it from the kitchen window. Put it away and need to rethink.

It seemed like we saw them more in spring then summer. Then everything started flowering and they visited that instead of the feeder, so we put it away for a couple months. We love them!
